CHECK UP
The purpose of the screening examination programs is to establish the precise diagnosis, the detection of diseases at the early stage and the development of effective measures of treatment and preventive maintenance. The programs of general check up may include:
Laboratory studies
Comprehensive screening tests, including a complete blood count, cholesterol
and lipid profile, urinalysis and blood chemistries. The purpose of these
screening tests is to detect problems such as anemia, diabetes, gout, liver
disease and kidney disorders. The cholesterol and lipid profile reveals
risk for atherosclerosis, which can cause heart disease or stroke. For men
at risk, a blood test is performed to detect prostate-specific antigen,
a marker for prostate cancer. Pap smear for women detects cervical cancer.
Resting electrocardiogram
(ECG)
A resting ECG records the electrical activity of the heart. Abnormalities
in the ECG may signify a number of potentially serious heart problems, which
can be treated.
Cardiac stress test
The treadmill exercise ECG test is performed to screen for unrecognized
coronary artery disease. This test can also reveal early signs of hypertension
and abnormal heart rhythms.
Visual acuity test
and tonometry
A vision screening is performed and pressure in the eyes is checked for
glaucoma.
Audiogram
Evaluates hearing and makes recommendations for preservation of hearing
and hearing amplification as needed.
Chest X-ray
This determines heart size and screens for lung cancer and other pulmonary
diseases.
Spirometry
This test helps to detect emphysema, bronchitis, asthma and other airway
problems.
Fiberoptic proctosigmoidoscopy
An examination is performed to diagnose cancer, polyps and other abnormalities
of the colon and rectum. This detects gastrointestinal bleeding from tumors,
polyps, ulcers and other causes.
Mammogram for women
Detects early breast cancer.
Additional options may include ultrasound examination of internal organs and vessels, echocardiography, ECG- and BP-monitoring, roentgenography and endoscopic studies. The specialized programs of examination in diagnostics of complex and rare diseases can include additional methods of examination - angiographic studies, electroencephalography, electromyography, biopsy, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and others.
Preventive medicine
specialists, gastroenterologists, audiologists, cardiologists, radiologists
and biochemists all lend their expertise to the examination. Exercise physiologists,
dietitians, neurologists, ophthalmologists and dermatologists often participate
as well. After the end of examination and following consultations individuals
receive a comprehensive report and guidance to better manage their health
within the context of a crowded calendar and highly productive lifestyle.
